As the percentage of the population over 65 continues to grow elder abuse has become a real concern. The estimate is that one in ten people over the age of 60 have experienced some form of elder abuse. The abusers are both men and women. Family members are often the perpetrators and statistics indicate that in 60% of elder abuse and neglect cases the perpetrator is a family member usually children or a spouse.
 
Elder abuse is realized in many forms: physical abuse; sexual abuse, emotional or psychological abuse, neglect, financial abuse or any combination of these factors. Some of the usual signs of elder abuse can be unexplained injuries, cuts and bruises, hesitation to talk openly, depression, fear and not having the necessaries of life to name just a few.
 
Elder abuse can happen to anyone regardless of gender, race, financial status, mental or physical condition.
