Our firm is a small and fast paced one, there is not the same hierarchy for student assignments seen at other firms. Our students get hands-on practical experience, direct file handling responsibility, and direct client contact. Our students get opportunities to appear in court and put their advocacy training to work.
In addition, our students get the opportunity to attend with and assist senior lawyers on trials and tribunal proceedings and participate in assisting lawyers on these files from start to finish. Our students work directly with senior partners, and indeed, with all levels of lawyers within our office during the course of their articles.
As a Zarek Taylor Grossman Hanrahan LLP articling student, you will receive comprehensive, practical exposure to our practice. You may assist lawyers in preparation for trials, mediation, arbitrations and hearings and may accompany them into court. Under supervision, you will conduct Small Claims Court litigation and appear frequently before the Ontario Superior Court of Justice on motions. You will be exposed to other practical aspects of a litigation practice by meeting and dealing with clients and other lawyers, drafting pleadings, motion materials, factums and memoranda of law. Since there is no formal rotation, students get a chance to have a breadth of experience, from involvement in big files to small files, plaintiff and defence, accident benefit, property and tort.
Student enthusiasm and talents are always welcome at social events including our annual client party and associate retreat.
Our students have told us that the articling experience with us provides them with “hands on,” practical exposure to the practice of law. Articling is treated as the first year of the practice of law as opposed to the fourth year of law school. Our students get practical experience in litigation, with an emphasis on client contact to enable students to hone their skills in developing solicitor-client relationships.
All lawyers in the firm, from senior partners to junior associates, are fully approachable and welcome an opportunity to participate in the students training and legal education. We maintain an “open door” policy throughout the office to provide guidance and direction to students, not only on particular file matters but also on general practice matters. We respect, listen to and give our students the chance to maximize their abilities.
